FIELD TRIP - BUSINDE WASHING STATION
Field Trip - Burundi, Businde Washing Station
Introducing 'Field Trip' – Our Second Staple Offering
We're thrilled to unveil Field Trip, the newest addition to our coffee lineup. With our 'Project Blend', we strive to balance the comforting flavours of traditional coffee with the refined nuances of specialty brews. Now, with Field Trip, we’re taking it a step further. On a rotating basis, depending on coffee availability, we'll feature a single origin that shines as a bright flavourful filter coffee.
Businde Coffee Washing Station is uniquely located in the hills of the Twa community, an ethnic group in Rwanda and Burundi that is among the poorest. Situated in Kayanza, Burundi, near the Rwandan border, it serves around 650 local farming families. The station pays its workers nearly 60% more than the local casual labour rate and provides farmers with a 20% premium above the local market price for their cherries.
Additionally, Businde helps local farmers by distributing composted coffee pulp as fertilizer and donating seedlings. The station processes 550 metric tonnes of cherries annually, using 126 raised drying beds, and employs 6 full-time staff, plus 120 seasonal workers at peak times. Their washed coffees undergo strict quality control, including 12 hours of fermentation and 20 days of drying. Businde exemplifies how supporting local communities can lead to higher profits for both coffee producers and staff.
